Sharpstown on way to being 'urban village'
By Katherine Feser
Houston Chronicle
In its early days, Sharpstown was
known as the largest subdivision in the country. Developed by
Frank Sharp between 1954 and 1968, the Sharpstown area
encompassed 6,800 homes, included a country club and Houston's
first air-conditioned mall.
Major traffic arteries such as the Southwest Freeway and
Bellaire Boulevard divide the community.
With guidance from City Councilman Ray Driscoll, homeowners and
businesses have formed the Sharpstown Area Economic Development
Council to enhance the area's image and property values. The
group visualizes an "urban village," with landscaped esplanades
and uniform signage.
Other plans include constable patrol, mosquito control and deed
restriction enforcement. The project would be funded by creating
a Public Improvement District, which would tax property owners.
Driscoll is holding town meetings to explain the proposals.
House designs in Sharpstown mirror the changes in society, as
the newer ones have central air, an extra bathroom, built-in
closets and bigger garages. "You can see how the things that
used to be luxuries became necessities," says BettyTownes, a
realty agent with RE/MAX Southwest.
Flat, but highly stable, property values have kept Sharpstown
affordable. Anne Pearson saw value in the neighborhood when she
purchased a brick-and-cedar one-story home surrounded by
gigantic trees. The house has hardwood floors and crown molding.
